There’s a lot to a cricketer’s kit bag. Gone are
the days of a pair of pads and gloves, with the
notion of even a helmet scoffed at. ‘Padding up’
has become a process involving as many as ten
protective items, with every piece of kit tailored
exactly to the player’s needs.
But just what exactly are our players wearing?
Luke Fletcher takes Covered through his kit bag.
HELMET

I’ve been hit in it once or twice, but fortunately never suffered
anything like Broady did. A lot of the batsmen prefer to use
Masuri helmets, but this is nicely padded and comfortable.

PROTECTION
ArmGuard & Chest Protector
Every time I go out to bat I’ll wear a chest protector. I’ve had
this one for probably six or seven years. It wasmade personally
for me by Remfry in Adelaide. They produce gear for all the
international cricketers out there and while I was playing out
there it was too good an opportunity to miss. I probably paid a
couple of hundred dollars at most, and it has been great since
that day.
It looks disgusting but it does the job really nicely. My arm
guard is horrible too, there’s blood on it. I save that for spells
where I’m likely to face some fast stuff on bouncy pitches.

PADS

Again,we’re looking at oversizemens formy pads. I get a brand
new set every year. I’mnot precious about them, and they take
a bit of a pounding through the summer. They’re good quality
and do the job well, but I’ll be getting a new set next season.
