RICHARD HADLEE
Test Match: August 25-29 1983 / England
won by 165 runs
Richard Hadlee claimed his 200th Test
wicket when he snared tail-ender Norman
Cowans in the second innings and claimed
the player of the series crown despite a 3-1
defeat overall.
Covered looks back on New Zealand’s 10
previous visits to Trent Bridge. The Black
Caps have played nine Test matches and
a solitary One-Day International against
England in Nottingham.
One Day International: June 11 1975 /
England won by 80 runs
Richard Hadlee was bowled for nought in
New Zealand’s only One Day International
against England at Trent Bridge in the 1975
World Cup. England were always in control
after Keith Fletcher’s knock of 131. Dayle
and Barry Hadlee were amongst Tony
Greig’s victims in match figures of 4-45.
Test Match: August 10-14 1978 / England
won by an innings and 119 runs
A 22 year-old Ian Botham returned
match figures of 9-93 in a contest utterly
dominated by England. The 111-run
opening stand between Geoff Boycott and
Graham Gooch set the tone for the match
with a feeble follow-on proving fruitless.
Test Match: August 7-12 1969 / Match drawn
Rain and bad light blighted the first
encounter between the two nations at
Trent Bridge where New Zealand’s joy
at removing Geoff Boycott for a 12-ball
duck was short-lived as John Edrich and
Phil Sharpe batted their way to individual
centuries and a 249-run partnership.
Test Match: June 7-12 1973 / England won
by 38 runs
Seven single figure scores in New Zealand’s
first innings allowed England to set the
tourists an unlikely victory target of 479 but
Bev Congdon’s 176 gave them a fighting
chance. Vic Pollard chipped in with a
patient 116 but lower order failings left
them 39 runs short.
