During the 1885 season, the club appealed for subscriptions for the build- ing of another new Pavilion and when that appeal fell short of expectations, it was agreed to borrow £3,000 to pay for part of the new construction. An extra acre of ground behind the 1873 building was leased by the club, which enabled an expansion of the playing area to coincide with the new Pavilion. Work on this latest Pavilion proceeded during the winter months – the archi- tect was Henry Milnes Townshend, the diocesan architect of Peterborough – and the building that has since been so iconic for Nottinghamshire cricket was open in time to welcome the Australian tourists for a drawn three-day game in May 1873. “The new Pavilion”, wrote our late historian PeterWynne-Thomas, “was the finest such structure in England and soon inspired the three other major “HAVING REPLACED TWO PAVILIONS, THIS SPLENDID BUILDING HAS LASTED NEARLY A CENTURY AND A HALF – BUT NOT WITHOUT ITS SHARE OF CHANGES.” Peter Smith
