It all started with older brother Jack – himself a batter, wicket-keeper, and now Leicestershire’s Head of Strength and Conditioning – who inspired Freddie to pick up his own piece of carved willow, and feels immense pride in the journey he has witnessed unfold over the years. “It has happened quickly, probably quicker than maybe we first thought,” Jack remarks, “but it’s great to see him get a foot in the door and make an impression so early. It’s about the progression and consistency now.” He turned down an opportunity to claim some credit for Freddie’s talent: “Watching me play probably inspired him to do better, to be fair – ‘is this all that he can do?’,” Jack laughs. “His first senior wicket was on a cold, windy day in Saturday twos cricket againstWelbeck: bowled McCann, caught McCann behind the wicket. He progressed past that standard pretty quickly.” The kind of kid who had his toes dipped into every sport he could imagine – football and rugby being two of his fondest activities – Freddie set himself up for later success with his passion for team sport. Though cricket came out on top in the end, Jack jests that his younger sibling might have squandered another career opportunity. “I think it’s crucial in anyone’s development in team sports, or in most sports in general, to have that experience of getting into all sorts of sports when you’re growing up. “I do think, however, that Forest might have missed out on a no-nonsense centre-back!”
