COVERED 2024 Spring

COVERED 14 TRENTBRIDGE.CO.UK “I’M INCREDIBLY EXCITED TO BE TAKING ON THE CHALLENGE OF TRYING TO GET US TO WHERE WE WANT TO BE.” Haseeb Hameed “I’ve had an incredible journey,” he says with a smile. “If there’s one thing that my career has taught me, it is that there’s only so much you can control and should look to control. “Setting goals is great, but there comes a point where you have to accept what you are given. What we can try to control is how we react to what happens to us. “This is a huge step in my journey and in my career to have received the club captaincy. It’s a huge honour and some- thing I don’t take lightly. “I’m incredibly excited to be taking on the challenge of trying to get us to where we want to be, which is winning trophies and having a sustained period of success.” Surrendering this illusion of control over life’s variables likely came in handy at the very beginning of Hameed’s career in green and gold. Only months into his time at Trent Bridge, and before the 2020 season had begun, COVID-19 had brought world- wide sport to a grinding halt. “We had spent all winter preparing for the season, and I remember first hearing these murmurs about some virus when I was in the gym.The lads were saying: ‘you know, we might not be playing this season’. “I just didn’t believe it, I thought it was madness,” he continues, “then we started hearing about lockdowns and – living in a hotel room at the time – I had all sorts of thoughts going through my head, panicking and thinking that I need to get back to Bolton to be with my family.” With that, time away from cricket when least expected perhaps presented a stark reminder of gratitude’s integral role in his way of life.
