In removing Surrey’s Jamie Overton in theVitality Blast final, the 24-year-old delivered arguably the standout moment of Finals Day. That it didn’t invite comparisons with the glovework of David de Gea, unlike a similar snaffle in 2018, probably had more to do with the indifferent form of the Manchester United stopper than any short- coming on Moores’ part. But the story of taking such a catch doesn’t begin when the ball grazes the edge of the bat, or when it leaves the hand of the bowler some 22 yards away. It is merely the latest stop on a cricketing journey that is a lifetime in the making. A journey that takes in ‘one-hand, one-bounce’ games in the back garden, a healthy helping of practice, analysis and self-reflection, and a host of landmarks on the domestic stage.
