19 @TRENTBRIDGE ANT BOTHA bowling, or techniques that allow them to bat well for longer periods of time. “Away from the indoor school, you’re sending texts, you’re sending videos, you’re chatting to the players, so planning takes on a natural flow. “While all that’s going on, we need to be constantly thinking about overarching aspects such as our culture, our behaviours, our values and the style of cricket we want to play. So, there’s lots to do. As you can imagine, it’s pretty full on.” The ultimate aim, of course, is success on the field of play. Botha says he’ll measure those outcomes in terms of trophies in the cabinet, but equally upon improvements within the individual players with whom he works. “Stripping it bare, it’s about doing the best job you can every single day,” he says. “It’s about engaging, listening and helping people reach their potential. “Success is measured in so many different ways, but if I can help create better people, better characters, that’s at the forefront of what I’m constantly trying to do. “Training people in relation to their skills is something I really enjoy and with it comes huge accountability because I’ve got an opportunity to help guys reach their potential. “The more we can do that, and the more we can put it all together within a healthy environment, winning is a by-product of all of those things – and, more often than not, success in professional sport is meas- ured by trophies. “I genuinely believe we’ve given ourselves a chance to become successful, in all formats, across a concerted period of time.
