of over a hundred.
In the final innings Notts required
144. Norman Hill and Geoff Millman
opened with a partnership of 101 and
victory was by 8 wickets.
The only other definite result in the
Notts v India series came in 1979 –
another Notts victory.
The firm of Holts Products offered
cash prizes for counties which beat
the Indians. Only Gloucestershire
and Notts did so.The Indians were
unfortunate in that both Richard
Hadlee and Clive Rice had just
returned for injury and simply bowled
too fast.
Hadlee took seven for 64, Rice eight
for 78, India all out 149 and 161 –
the following week India scored 429
for eight in the Final Test v England
at The Oval – India required just 15
more runs to beat England when
time ran out, so it was the quality of
the Notts attack rather than general
weakness in Indian batting that had
given the county the edge.
In between those wins there were
three drawn matches.The 1967
encounter was a high scoring draw.
Ian Moore made 206 for Notts –
minor interesting point the Nawab of
Pataudi junior followed his dad (in
1946) as captain of the tourists.
In 1971 came the third match in
the series with at least one day
totally washed out.The pitch was a
batsman’s paradise in 1974 – three
declarations resulted in the county
being set 233 in 120 minutes.
The final Notts v India first-class,
that of 1982, was painful to watch.
Pranab Roy, the Indian opener, batted
240 minutes for 51. No more needs
saying.
In summary therefore Notts and India
have met in ten first-class matches,
India have yet to win – eight draws
and two Notts successes.
For the pedants and those who turned
up on the day, I’d be called to task if I
didn’t add the Notts v India 1999 50-
over game. First because India won
convincingly and maybe even more
importantly,Tendulkar, arguably
the greatest post-war batsman, hit
a scintillating 91 off 113 balls.With
Dravid he put on 155 in 29 overs.
Jason Gallian was the only Notts
player to flourish in the county’s vain
attempt to match the Indians’ total,
which the Duckworth Lewis method
finally settled.
