“The IPL is the biggest tournament
in the world, so it’s a massive honour
to even have been considered in the
auction.
“To have done well after being picked
up would be testament to a lot of
hard work, and for someone who
still harbours England ambitions, it
would have put my name back into
contention for limited-overs cricket at
least.”
England’s national side are in the
middle of a much-documented period
of transition. After parting company
with Andy Flower through the winter,
the ECB are yet to appoint a new
Head Coach to lead the side.
One name that has been thrown
into the hat is Mick Newell’s, and
for Patel, his Nottinghamshire coach
displays all of the attributes needed to
succeed in the international game.
“Mick’s man management skills are
second to none; he’s exceptional
at dealing with different players in
different ways to get the best out
of them in different scenarios and
situations,” he said.
“The successes we’ve had here at
Notts are testament to Mick and how
he works.
“Obviously going forward to England
would be a completely different ball
game.
“It would be a bigger catch for him,
among bigger fish, in a much bigger
pond.
“I know that Andy will be
disappointed at how his time at the
head of the team came to an end, and
I hope that he’ll remain involved with
the team in some way.
“He has done a lot for English cricket
and he’s an excellent coach so for him
to stay in the Eng
land setup would
be a huge benefit to the side
moving forward.”
