the lead in an Ashes series for the first time
since 1997.
“It was definitely a turning point from our
point of view, in being able to stand up and
beat the Australians,” saidTrescothick.
“They were just about at their peak, a very
good side and beating most teams around
the world in most circumstances.
“It was the first time for a long time that
we stood up, matched them and were able
to beat them and since then really - bar the
next series that we lost five-nil - the England
team has been really strong and the results
have followed, and hopefully will stay the
same for a long time to come.”
Widely touted as the most exciting series
in recent history, the 2005 Ashes provides
memories of high drama and excitement
for fans and players alike. For the players
involved over that summer, it is taken one
step further - as a career highlight.
“It was amazing. It still lives on now
and when people talk about Test series
victories it’s probably one of the first ones
they talk about, even though we’ve won
The Ashes again over the past few years,”
said Trescothick. “That series was special,
because of the history that had gone by,
because of the way that it played out, all of
the drama and Australia being the force that
they were at the time.
“It was a gripping series, right up until the
last minute, the last 20 overs of the contest,
even then it was wide open. Because it was
so close and the two teams were playing
such excellent cricket, that’s probably the
series that fans remember the most.
“It was amazing to have played such a
significant part of it and being involved in
such a special occasion that has become a
milestone in cricketing history.”
Looking forward to July,Trent Bridge will be
hosting the first Test of the summer series.
After a winter involving drama against New
Zealand, England will be looking to impose
themselves on a troubled Australia side
from the first ball.
“I think England will dominate the series,”
saidTrescothick.
“We should - in fact I expect - come out
victorious in the context of the series but
we have to make sure that we’re wary of
Australia. I think it’s easy to sit back and
almost become a little complacent.
“You’ve got to be strong, confident, be up
for a fight and that first Test is a big game.
Hopefully from there we’ll come out on top
and it’ll go on brilliantly.”
