but give support, encouragement and

Peter cites the acquisition of the Club’s
training ground at Lady Bay, the re-
introduction of the Nottinghamshire
Academy to the Notts Premier League
and the continued development of Trent
Bridge as the sort of projects that began as
Committee edicts.
Vice Chairman Richard Tennant is well
acquainted with the ways in which the powers
and purpose of Nottinghamshire’s Committee
has changed. His father was a long-serving
Committee member in an era in which
Mick Newell’s predecessors were directly
accountable to the designated Chairman of
Cricket and the Cricket Sub-Committee.
“Everyone wanted to be on the Cricket
Committee because, fundamentally, you have
to be a cricket fan to be motivated to serve on
the General Committee,” said Richard.
“The transition to a reporting line where
the Director of Cricket is accountable to
the Chief Executive took a long time to
implement as we had to ensure that the
interference of decades gone by didn’t get
in the way of decision making.
“Mick’s cricket updates are the first item on
the agenda at General Committee Meetings
and there is a lot of interest in them. We’re
mindful not to interfere but to provide a
sounding board when it’s needed. There is
still a Chairman of Cricket who acts as the
Committee’s day to day liaison with Mick.
That post is currently held by Bill Taylor, a
former player of the Club.
“One such issue was establishing the Club’s
policy as towhether we should release players
to feature in the IPL. This was obviously a
major issue for the Club and whilst Mick
had his own view, it was discussed at length
during a Committee Meeting and resulted
in a united approach as to the way forward.”
Whilst Mick Newell has become a regular
fixture in the Committee Room, the
Dressing Room it seems has been liberated
from the nineteenth century control of
Nottinghamshire’s elected guardians.
