What was the last film you went to see at the cinema?
The Longest Yard (released in 2005). That’s bad, isn’t it? I
find it properly hard to go to the cinema. I don’t like being
there and having to sit next to people who laugh at things
I don’t find funny and ‘sshhhh’ all the time. Give me a DVD.
When was the last time you were starstruck?
Kano. I met Kano in Melbourne airport when I was out
there with England. I was stood with Monty, getting some
food, he turned around and said ‘mate… there’s Kano.’
He’d just done a gig down there, I couldn’t believe it. We
were giggling like kids.
What’s the most expensive gift you’ve ever given
someone?
I gave my mum a £50,000 car. That might sound like I
splash cash everywhere, but I’ve always tried to look
after her with cars. I bought it for myself, but let her use it
while I was in Australia. I rang her up on her birthday and
she said she loved it, so I let her keep it.
What’s your pet peeve?
People who give it big, talk themselves up but never back
it up. It drives me mad.
What would be your last meal?
Probably a Nandos. I go there nearly every day. I just
love grilled chicken with rice, or sweet potato mash. I
cook it all the time. Oh, I don’t have to worry about the
consequences? BBQ spare ribs, or my mum’s cooking, or
some really, really greasy curry.
You have £100 and a free evening, what do you do?
I’d drive down to London and have an evening out. Go to a
West End play, or sightsee. I’m still in awe of the place. In
fact, I’d probably just go to Selfridges for the night.
Have you ever googled yourself? If so,what did you find?
I have, actually, fairly recently. I was booked in for a
haircut and wanted to see what I looked like with shorter
hair. I found some proper old school pictures of me. I
think short hair looks good on fast bowlers, but I’m trying
to be trendy at the moment, so it’s staying as it is. (A
hollow promise. Ajmal returned to pre-season training
with a Google-inspired number 4 all over.)
What’s your party trick?
I tell you what, I back myself as a good singer. My karaoke
tune of choice? Shai – If I Ever Fall In Love. Gabrielle did
a version of that, with East 17. It was banging. Swanny
knows, he loves it.
